Hyundai Kona Electric
The standard Hyundai Kona is a strange-looking vehicle, but it still looks stylish and refreshing. The Kona EV keeps the same styling, they’re almost indistinguishable if you’re not an avid car enthusiast, but this isn’t necessarily bad.
If you run into a Kona EV, the styling cues that differentiate it from the regular Kona are minimal, such as the closed-off EV grille and the tiny badge on the back that reads electric. If you really want to scream at people that you bought an EV, perhaps you should look at Kona’s more boisterous cousin, the IONIQ 5.
Hyundai has priced the Kona EV at $33,550 to start, opening up the world of practical EV SUVs to more people. The Kona EV might not be the largest EV out there, and it definitely won’t fit as much cargo as the huge EV pickup trucks currently for sale, but it’s still mighty practical. Considering the Kona EV can also go 258 miles on a full charge, range anxiety shouldn’t be a worry.
Inside, the Kona EV is much more restrained than the IONIQ 5, but this is to be expected considering the price difference between the two vehicles. Future Hyundai EVs
Hyundai is only getting started with its EV lineup, and performance EVs will most definitely be at the forefront of its future offerings. One notable Hyundai coming in 2023, according to Car and Driver, is an N version of its already brilliant IONIQ 5 SUV.
One production car was confirmed for the near term: a pure electric Ioniq 5 N slated to be available in 2023.
This is great news, especially because the IONIQ 5 is already an amazing vehicle, so it’ll be a superb platform for a more performance-oriented version. The details are minimal, but Hyundai has an amazing product in the works to compete with the heavy hitters in the performance EV segment.
One thing is for sure, the N version of the IONIQ 5 will be among the best-looking EVs whenever it hits the market. The entire look of the IONIQ 5 is already so perfect that it’s difficult to imagine how Hyundai will improve upon it. Hopefully, they won’t add any crazy wings for downforce or other over-the-top aerodynamic bits that detract from the great proportions of the IONIQ 5.
Another amazing Hyundai EV that gives us a peek into its performance future is the RN22e. This is a concept car that looks like a heavily modified IONIQ 6. Although it must be said, the RN22e is so much meaner than a standard IONIQ 6.
This is one of the most exciting concept cars at the moment, especially because it’s a vehicle that could very well make it into production, looking very similar to what the concept car promises. Hyundai’s RN22e looks like it was taken straight out of a racetrack, which is not something you’d associate with the Korean brand.
The RN22e produces 740Nm of torque, which is more than enough to keep your passengers scared at all times. In addition, fast charging is a huge priority for Hyundai, and the RN22e exhibits this with a blistering time of fewer than 18 minutes to get from 10% to 80% charge.
These vehicles provide a great glimpse into what Hyundai has planned for its future EVs, especially the sportier ones that will unquestionably give the brand a boost in the eyes of enthusiasts.
Hyundai Is Setting Itself Up to Be a Global EV Leader
Hyundai is setting a great foundation for its EV ambitions, and the future looks bright for Korean automakers. The current crop of EVs offered by Hyundai are high quality and sets them apart from the competition.
But Hyundai’s concept cars reveal that the company is also looking to take over the performance EV segment, which is great to see. It will be exciting to see how the Hyundai electric lineup continues to grow.
