Gamers have been eagerly waiting for Sony’s next-gen VR experience, the PS VR2. And thankfully, the wait is almost over. PlayStation announced it will release the PS VR2 on February 22, 2023.
If you don’t want to miss out on Sony’s latest VR experience, the best option is to get in early and preorder it. However, the preorder structure for PS VR2 is interesting, to say the least, and fans will first have to register for the chance to preorder the system.
What Is the PS VR2?
The PS VR2 is the successor of the original PS VR, which utilized the PS4. Sony has since released its next-gen console, the PS5, which of course, requires a next-gen VR system to accompany it.
The PS VR2 is not a self-contained unit like the Meta Quest 2—you must connect it to a PS5 console to use it. If you don’t already own a PS5, this dramatically increases the price of owning and operating the PS VR2. But for those that already have a PS5, the price is an easier pill to swallow.
Still, PS VR2 is a high-quality system with high-quality specs that, in turn, comes with a rather high price tag. The price, however, is reasonable considering the technology used in the system.
The PS VR2 will cost $549.99 for the base model, which comes with the headset, a pair of controllers, and stereo headphones. For those that want to make sure they have a game to use with their new toy, there is a Horizon: Call of the Mountain bundle available for $599.99.

When Can You Pre-Order the PS VR2?
Preorders for the PS VR2 start on November 15, 2022. However, it’s not guaranteed you can reserve yourself one of these systems on the day. Rather than simply placing your order like you usually do when preordering something, in this case, you will have to first register for the chance to be invited by Sony to preorder the PS VR2.
If selected, Sony will email you further instructions on placing your order. The company has released little information regarding the selection process or when it will send the emails. But we can presume the process is in place to combat shortages and scalpers from dominating the market.
We saw this with the PS5—scalpers bought up massive quantities of the console to sell on websites such as eBay for extortionate prices. If you are looking for a new PS5 console to use with the PS VR2, check out our guide before purchasing to ensure you’re not buying your PS5 from a scalper.
How to Pre-Order the PS VR2
Registrations are open now for those from the US, the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.
For those located outside these regions, Sony indicated you may still be able to register if the PlayStation store delivers to your location. Still, there is no guarantee that the company will accept your registration.
To register for an invitation to preorder the PS VR2, you will need a PSN ID. If you don’t have a PSN account, you can register on the Sony website. Also, note that users are limited to one preorder per PSN ID.
Once you have your PSN ID, log into your account on the PlayStation store, search for the PS VR2 product page, and press the Register button. Your application is automatically sent to Sony. All that’s left to do is wait for Sony’s response and see if you’re one of the lucky few to receive an invitation to preorder the PS VR2 on November 15.
If your registration is not accepted, or you live in a region where you’re unable to register for preorder, there could still be a chance you can get your hands on one of these systems. Other retailers, as well as the PlayStation store itself, will likely stock the PS VR2 after its release in February 2023.
Could This Be the New Norm for Pre-Orders?
This new method of registering for an invitation to preorder something is an interesting model, but it might be something we see more of in the industry. Hopefully, this tactic works for Sony, and the PS VR2 finds itself in the hands of eager fans rather than scalpers.
